Robotics
The robotics industry is a hugely exciting field, and has the potential to make a real difference to our lives. According to The Telegraph, currently the race is on to develop the next generation of smart robotic machines, capable of helping us to tackle many of the problems we face in today’s modern world. The IET predicts that the greatest opportunities within this field, for engineers, will lie within the domain of automating manufacturing processes. They also point to a number of key areas in particular, where the UK can establish itself as a world leader in robotics, such as in the development of robotic machines for the nuclear sector, and in the design of robots for use in the medical and health care sectors. Significantly, it’s predicted that if the UK is successfully able to drive growth in this sector, and achieve its projected market share by the year 2025, this industry will generate revenues for the economy of around £75 billion.
3D Printing
3D Printing has been hailed by some as having the potential to revolutionise the manufacturing industry, and may even spark a new industrial revolution. Whist 3D printing has yet to take off on a large scale, and is currently only utilised by a small fraction of the commercial manufacturing industry, there’s no denying the huge excitement surrounding this new technology, and its potential. The 3D printing revolution is expected to create a wealth of opportunities for engineers here in the UK, in a number of key areas. This includes the refinement of 3D printing technologies, so that they are capable of supporting large-scale production, in the development of new printing materials, and in the improvement of product quality.
